Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a benefit to low income households in providing for food assistance benefits. Most grocery stores, and many convenience stores will accept SNAP as an option. SNAP is only to purchase human consumable foods. Cat food, or dog food does not qualify. Also hot foods do not qualify even if they are for people. One can not go into a convenience store, pour a cup of coffee, and use SNAP to pay for the coffee. One thing that some people would do is make two separate purchases. One purchase will be for the SNAP groceries, and the second purchase will be for those that don’t support SNAP. Many grocery stores can separate these totals in one bill, so the recipient will be able to pay for food with SNAP, and the remaining items with cash/card.
At least in Pennsylvania, SNAP still uses a magnetic strip for recipients to use to process payments. This in my opinion is a security issue that should be addressed immediately. Any future replacement cards should be using an EMV chip (the chip on your debit/credit card). This will improve security, and reduce the chance of misuse.
